I am still on my extended maternity leave from client services, but this week marked my debut as a work-from-home-mom with the start of a new semester at Butler. I’m continuing my work as an adjunct professor in the COE’s Masters in Clinical Mental Health Couneling program. Excited to be teaching on Trauma & Crisis, and Foundations of Mental Health Counseling to future clinicians and school counselors!

I’ll be sure the share here when I am doing clinical work again. Thanks for being along for the ride 🤗

How are you supposed to feel at the end of a therapy session?

I think clients and practitioners alike will have differing opinions on this.

I recently received feedback from a client (that I will summarize in broad strokes so as not to use their direct words) that something unique about my style of counseling is that I don’t always leave clients feeling happy at the end of our 50 minutes together.

They appreciated that I wasn’t trying to rescue them from uncomfortable feelings.

This felt like a huge compliment to me!
I DO ensure that clients leave sessions regulated (I.e. I’m not going to let you end the session hyperventilating or dissociated) but…if you’re still feeling sad, worried, unsure about something, angry, etc etc, I trust that you’ll continue to marinate in the processing and practices that we did together and that you will continue to facilitate your own healing outside of the session.

I trust that you’ll be okay. I trust that you’ll continue to uncover insights. I trust that you’ll come to a place of deeper self-compassion and appreciation as you allow yourself to taste the full continuum of the human experience.

The goal of mental health care is not necessarily to alleviate pain. It is to expand our tolerance for pain, and to remove the stigma associated with it. This is the therapy work.

I’m so grateful to get to join folks in the trenches and embolden them to do the messy work there. ❤️

Imagine the repercussions of not wearing a helmet at all then??

Most of my hobbies in adulthood have involved helmets or other protective gear! Bike helmets, climbing helmets, SAR GPS devices, harnesses, life jackets, goggles, knee pads, gloves, bear spray…🚵🏽‍♀️🧗🏽‍♀️

And I think of this gear much like I think about the skills that we gain in therapy.

We can learn all the right coping skills, practice the best regulation techniques, acquire relationship-altering insight, apply all this progress….and yet two truths still stand:

1. A helmet only works if you wear it.
2. Life still hurts, even with the right gear.

So this post is a reminder: Your enlightening insights only help if you integrate them. AND sometimes life still hurts even when you employ your skills. I think we gotta be real about that.

With that said- I believe the adventure is still worth taking. And the helmet is still worth wearing. Because the risks are relative when we show up with the right gear.

Idk about you, but I’d choose a concussion over brain splatter any day…metaphorically and literally.

Commemorative ice-cream (duh?) for the wrap-up of another semester adjunct teaching at Butler University. 🥳

This semester I took on the challenge of teaching a more advanced, skills-based course: Fundamentals in Counseling, wherein masters level counseling students finally get to try their hand at doing counseling, after mostly theorizing in previous classes.

Without a doubt, my favorite part of the semester was witnessing students become more comfortable with ✨silence✨.

Awkward giggles and squirms, filler-words, and unsolicited advice slowly transform into confident gazes, regulated breathing, and a more patient cadence that paves the way for deeper clinical insight.

The epiphanies come, as students reflect on the therapeutic power of silence, and the magic that happens when our exploration is client-led.

I’ll never forget my first client who pushed back (hard) on my use of silence, and how that has since become a core part of my assessment in getting to know a client. I am so curious about how a client responds both physically and verbally to a few seconds of pause. We can all learn so much about ourselves in these moments!

Teaching this class challenged me to remember what it felt like to first put on my own counseling hat and watch the theory materialize. In many ways I have come to take these basic attending skills for granted.

I’m grateful to these eager learners for reminding me of both the nerves and excitement of just getting started in a helping career. Here’s to another great semester. 🐶

A glimmer of joy: fresh “thank-you” flowers. 💐

Another glimmer: 60 degrees today. 🌞

“Glimmer” is a term that in recent years has come to mean the opposite of “triggers.” Or rather, they are a trigger in and of themself, but the positive kind.

In the same way that some stimuli can trigger distress for our nervous systems….other stimuli can elicit peace and safety for our nervous system: glimmers.

Glimmers can be small or seemingly mundane. They can also be big, profound, or surprising.

Glimmers are all around us- especially in our Microsystems. When the macro feels doom and gloom, become attuned to your micro- the glimmers are all around, offering hope and peace. ✨ A balm to the friction that is leaving many feeling raw.

Rituals for closure, rituals for beginnings, rituals for connection, rituals for celebration.

Daily rituals, and rituals for special occasions.

This has helped folks pause, find more presence, and be more alive to their life.

For me, I enjoyed the ritual of scheduling a haircut a couple hours after my last appointment of the year, to cleanse and cut away.

I look forward to resuming services refreshed, restored, and re-inspired in the new year!

It’s been said that therapy is one of the few jobs in which you can experience the emotions of both a “funeral” and a “wedding” all in the same day.

This has certainly been a week of both weddings and funerals for the American people.

I will not lie and say that it is always easy to hold space for both. This week has been no exception, and helpers are human too after all.

Hear me out: We often skip the very basics out of an interest in “digging deep.” And while there may be significant insights and life-wounds worth exploring…we cannot dismiss the power of holistic wellness habits on the state of our mental health.

During my time in the counseling field (nearing 7 years) I have observed the power of integrating holistic wellness habits WITH talk therapy.

I’ve been referring to this as “the melding of deep + practical” in the therapy space for some time now. While this has been intuitive to me, I’ve recognized a gap in my professional scope to responsibly incorporate this into the treatment process.

Until now! As a Licensed Therapist, I will forever be a student of psychology, therapy, and the human experience. But I am so excited to celebrate that I have completed the additional process to become a Certified Integrative Mental Health Professional.

Really, what this means is that we’ll continue to dig deep AND move forward with practical integration of concepts like: nutrition, hydration, sleep hygiene, movement/exercise, light-exposure, mindfulness, nature experiences, and other holistic protocols to support the powerful talk therapy that we have been doing all along. I’m excited to feel more adequately equipped to integrate these concepts into the therapeutic experience, and have been seeing great success with clients already!

Did you know…from time to time I’ll read a book alongside one of my clients, so that we can process and integrate the information in a more collaborative way!

Sometimes this is due to my suggestion.

Other times a client will mention the desire to read a specific text, but hesitancy to do so alone.

I currently am reading “Death is But a Dream” by Christopher Kerr, MD, PhD with a client who is exploring their orientation to the death/dying process, as well as processing some childhood grief.

I’m only a few chapters in, but am loving it so far. A fresh take and different perspective than the Kübler-Ross classic “On Death and Dying.”

Kerr is a hospice physician, sharing his anecdotal observations after years of working with dying populations. My perspective so far is that it is intended to be a hopeful perspective on how we progress through the death stage of our development as humans, and a suggestion for medical providers to consider the personal dying experience as an integral part of their work with patients, not viewing death as failure, but rather a part of the process as a whole.

Naturally, today I chose to take a little hike and picnic while doing my “homework” to prepare for an upcoming session.

My perspective so far is that it is intended to be a hopeful perspective on how we progress through the death stage of our development as humans, and a suggestion for medical providers to consider the personal dying experience as an integral part of their work with patients, not viewing death as failure, but rather a part of the process as a whole.

Naturally, today I chose to take a little hike and picnic while doing my “homework” to prepare for an upcoming session.

Did you know that my office decor was inspired by the colors and maps of my adventures out west?

In 2020 I took a 7-week road trip to rock climb, hike, and ride my bike around the American southwest. I lived in the back of my built-out CRV and truly had the time of my life.

I’ll never forget my first tjme seeing the dessert color pallet in real life.

HCS has moved (don’t worry, we’re still in the same building on south Meridian downtown) just down the hall into a better space. We’ve got the same inspiring colors, and cozy vibe, but with some upgrades (how about the bigger window?! 😍).

We’ll also be just outside of the outdoor seating area, which I am stoked to make good use of.

After lots of vacation time this summer, I am looking forward to building up my caseload even more, so if you are looking for a down-to-earth therapist OR you’re a fellow therapist, in dire need of some clinically relevant business coaching….I gotchu!

NOT HERE.

I will do everything in my power to ensure a strong internet connection, high sound quality, a charged device, HIPAA complaint privacy, and my undivided attention.

I treat virtual sessions just as professionally as in-person.

Regardless of location, I strive to provide the best counseling experience possible.

As a result, I’ve had clients drive as far as 1.5 hours for our appointments! HCS is truly something unique!

But for folks who don’t want to make that far of a drive (believe me, I know that even 25 minutes across the city can be a lot sometimes!!) I am here and ready to log on!

I love having this as an option for folks who usually meet in person but need to stay home, or for clients that live in different parts of the state!

If you were a fly on the wall of my counseling office, on any given day you’d witness an exploration of the full spectrum of human existence with my clients. Sometimes it’s grief. Sometimes it’s joy. Often it’s both and many feelings in between.

It’s not every day you get to guide a group of about 60 teens on a hike! Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Inc. joined me last week for about 2.5 miles through the 100 Acres at the IMA, and it was a blast. 🌲

@kibiorg offers their summer crew an enrichment series that covers several pillars of wellness as it relates to nature. I was so excited to be invited to facilitate on the topic of spiritual wellness! ✨

My own orientation toward the topic of spirituality has involved many twists and turns, though exploring my interconnectedness to the natural world around me has been a crucial component of my own journey towards holistic wellness. What a significant and deep concept to explore alongside our youth.

We began the morning with some psychoeducation and large group exploration of the idea “what is spirituality” and what the research encourages us regarding health outcomes for folks with a spiritual practice.

Next we embarked on our group hike, which incorporated a BINGO / Scavenger Hunt to look for symbolism in the environment that would be representative of the spiritual concepts we discussed.

Last, we debriefed and discussed in smaller groups, ending with a “higher-self” visualization exercise.

These kids were AMAZING and so engaged. Lots of great feedback was given and I left feeling equally encouraged.

Since my time as a school counselor, I’ve really missed working with teens. It’s true what they say- that if you want to feel hopeful, to spend time with our youth. They are truly brilliant. 🌞

This morning ecotherapy looked like leading 60 high schoolers on a hike and spiritual wellness discussions.

This afternoon, ecotherapy will look cozied up in my therapy office, surrounded by plants, maps, and earthy art, or maybe slipping into comfier shoes and walking through the city.

We aren’t just observers of nature, we ARE nature. Just as we witness the birds, and worms, and mushrooms….the birds l, and worms, and mushrooms witness us.

I love this work of meeting folks where they are and connecting to their inner (and outer) nature so much!
